Creative Arts

Creative work asks something unusual of people psychologically.
Actors and other creative professionals move between periods of intense work and uncertainty, build close relationships quickly, work across locations and time zones, inhabit emotionally demanding material and, for actors, repeatedly move into and out of other people's lives.
At JustForward, we bring applied psychology into the creative industries: providing confidential psychological support to individuals, and working with productions to strengthen the relationships, wellbeing and performance.
Anchor Sessions
Psychological support for actors and creative professionals
Anchor Sessions offer a preventative approach to psychological support.
Rather than waiting until something is wrong, we work with people across the year, creating a trusted psychological relationship that is already there when life or work becomes more demanding.
You might book a small number of Anchor Sessions across the year as regular psychological check-ins. These give you space to notice what is happening, reflect on patterns, strengthen resilience and think about how you want to navigate your work and life.
When more support is needed, that relationship is already established.
The rhythm can flex around the realities of a creative career. There may be periods when you don't need us at all and others when more regular sessions are helpful — during or after a demanding role, between jobs, while working away from home, across different time zones, or during periods of personal or professional change.
Sessions might explore:
-
managing the emotional and psychological demands of the work
-
relationships, boundaries and patterns that can emerge within the industry
-
identity, success, rejection and uncertainty
-
understanding why particular situations, roles or relationships affect you as they do
-
creating healthier and more sustainable patterns around work and life
-
separating self from role and psychologically leaving a character behind
-
transitions into and out of productions
-
recognising when more focused psychological support might be helpful
The intention is not to pathologise the experience of being an actor or creative professional. It is to have a psychologically informed space in which to understand it.
Production Psychology
Treating the cast and crew as a high-performance team
High-budget and long-running productions bring exceptional people together under unusual conditions.
Cast and crew may work intensely alongside one another for six, nine or twelve months — often under considerable pressure, sometimes away from home, and on returning productions, coming back together across multiple seasons.
In other high-performance environments, we recognise that sustained performance isn't simply about assembling talented individuals. How people understand themselves, communicate, build relationships, navigate difference and respond under pressure matters too. We think productions deserve the same attention.
Our Production Psychology offer treats the cast and crew as a high-performance team — bringing applied psychology into the production lifecycle to strengthen relationships, support wellbeing and help people perform sustainably together.
Our approach is simple:
START WELL
Build the foundations before the pressure builds.
We work with an agreed core group of cast and crew using Mindflick Spotlight, a psychological profiling approach developed within high-performance environments. Each person receives an individual debrief with a JustForward psychologist before coming together for a facilitated team session.
The focus is practical: understanding how different people work and communicate, what happens under pressure, where differences can become strengths or sources of friction, and how people can adapt to get the best from one another.
For casts, we can also offer a creative session using the same psychological framework to explore characters — their motivations, relationships, differences and potential points of connection and conflict.
STAY WELL
Create psychological support before it's needed.
At agreed points during filming, JustForward psychologists return to the production to offer confidential individual check-ins with members of the core team.
The principle is preventative. People don't need to wait until something is wrong.
Having already met us earlier in the production, there is an established relationship and a familiar psychologist available when someone wants space to think, reflect, notice patterns or work through something more difficult.
Additional confidential psychological support can be arranged where needed.
END WELL
How a team finishes matters too.
Wrap isn't simply the end of a shooting schedule. People may be leaving an intense team, close relationships, a daily structure and, for actors, a character and fictional world they have inhabited for months.
We return towards the end of production for confidential individual sessions and an Ending Well team workshop. The focus is reflection, transition and psychological separation: recognising what people want to take from the experience, what they need to leave behind, and how to move well into whatever comes next. For returning productions, Ending Well also creates the foundations for coming back together well next season.
Production Psychology is designed particularly for high-budget, long-running and returning productions where relationships, performance and team longevity matter. Rather than waiting for difficulties to emerge, we build psychological thinking and support into the lifecycle of the production.
Exceptional productions don't just need exceptional people.
They need exceptional people to work well together.
